Let me tell you a very cute, charming, and FUNNY story…
When my older son was 4 years old, I took him to the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery.
We walked into the room where they have many of the presidential portraits.
He started asking me who the various people were.
“There's Eisenhower, there's Kennedy, there's Nixon” I pointed out.
“Who's that Daddy?”
“Jimmy Carter. Just keep moving.”
Then, in the corner of the gallery there was a TV playing a video.
My son ran to the couch to watch the video.
It was showing memorable clips from famous presidential speeches.
“Ask not what your country can do for you…”
“The only thing we have to fear…”
And then something very interesting happened.
They showed Ronald Reagan in front of the Berlin Wall.
He said “Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate.” and the audience on the recording erupted in noisy applause.
And then, before Reagan could continue, my 4 year old son shouted out “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!”
The woman sitting next to us nearly fell off the couch.
“How on earth did he know that?” she asked.
“My kids are teenagers and they don't even know that!” she added.
I was stunned initially, but then I remembered that about 6 months earlier we had been building things with Legos and Tommy had built a wall and kept wanting the other toys to tear it down.
So I had told him he should say “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!”
I certainly didn't expect him to remember the line, much less realize he could finish a speech when he heard it on a video.
I must say, I was quite the proud father that day.
(After all, he has good taste in presidents.)
So what does this have to do with real estate and business?
Simple, actually.
We all have walls that need to be torn down so that we can make the changes necessary to grow and thrive.
Sometimes the walls are obvious.
Sometimes they are not.
But when you have the walls pointed out to you a funny thing happens: you can't deny their existence any longer, which leaves you no choice other than to tear them down. (If you are truly serious about moving ahead.)
